After watching the NFL combine and watching more tape on the 3 top prospects, Benardrick McKinney, Denzel Perryman, and Eric Kendricks, I honestly don’t believe any of them are worth a first round grade when it comes down to it. With that said I believe we need to take a big guy on defense. There are a lot of rushers/run stoppers in this years draft worthy of first round picks and a few of them could be around at 30 like Eddie Goldman, DT-FSU, Owamagbe Odighizuwa, DE-UCLA, Jordan Phillips, DT-Oklahoma to name a few. So should Thompson go after a worthy first rounder like one of these big guys or go ahead and take a ILB which we all know is a position of need this year? I believe at pick #60 the Pack’s 2nd round there will be a ILB worthy of that still available like Stephone Anthony, ILB-Clemson or Ramik Wilson, ILB-Georgia. Who knows maybe even a name like Perryman or Kendricks could still be there as well since they are really not a first round worthy pick this year. Right now the top 3 I mentioned are slated to come off the board in the second round Kendricks at around pick 48, Perryman at 54 and McKinney at 57 but one or two could drop down to that magic 60 mark.
So the question is D-lineman or Inside linebacker first?
I want to hear from Packer nation on this subject. Leave me a comment below or drop one in back on the Facebook Fanpage here.
Go Pack Go!
Thanks, Jeff
Pick the best person for our needs at the time stop the draft and cut techniques.
We will not get high pick for the forseable future. This is our chance at couple good players. Stop throwing away picks on good “potential” then release them. That’s wasting our picks. If they are available pick them..waiting gets second or third best. Not good enough for Superbowl bound team
Take an Inside LB.Hawk is serviceable as a Backup. If not take a stud offensive Left Tackle providing the Packers Don’t Resign Buglaga.Move Bakhitari over to Right Tackle.
If there isn’t a true 1st round ILB trade down for a higher 2nd rounder to get an extra pick (maybe a 3 or 4) and take one of the top 3 ILB earlier in the 2nd than at #60.
The Packers kept Hubbard and Thomas on IR, so they must have seen something they like with both of them. Anyone who’s suffered from bone spurs knows that Hawk was fighting through a lot of pain for the last couple years, which would influence his mobility, and now that should be no longer be a factor. With Barrington also coming along nicely, I’m not so sure we need ILB so badly.
Even assuming we sign Raji, NT is position of need, as well as DE. Guion was serviceable, but not good enough, in my opinion, at taking up blockers and getting off blocks. A good NT will make any ILB better. So that’s where I’d focus on for the 1st round – NT or DE. Go Pack go!
I agree David and maybe TT trades down to get more picks in round 1 next year since they are not that bad off with who they got coming back this year and the rookies that could make the jump also like Thornton and Robinson so the line is not in bad shape either. Maybe a corner in the late rounds and another O lineman for depth?
This draft is fairly deep at DT and DE, both of which I consider needs for our team. The stats prove overwhelmingly that 1st round picks pay off much more often than the later rounds, so I sincerely hope we don’t trade out of the 1st round for more picks later on. Go Pack go!
I honestly don’t see any reasons listed for not taking any of the ILB you mentioned, Jeff. Please help me understand why you don’t think one should be selected? IMO an article based on judgement should explain the judgement…just my two cents.
I will be writing a post today explaining why ILB is not as bad as people think it is Svend
Loved the post for today Jeff thank you
I think what the Packers need is a big, strong, quick, defensive line that can rush and stop the run and get to the QB. Some beef on the offensive line would work also.
The Pack Should Go Quality run stopper or DB that can impact the game right away. Inside linebacker is a urgent need, but a quality pass rusher or run stopper will make their (DB’S & LineBackers)jobs easier. DB’S & Linebackers are @the 2nd and 3rd level of the Defense. If you have a hard time winning in the Trenches(1st Line of Da Defense). It’s Hard to Win Rings that Way!!
Why is everyone getting distracted? think about it….what was our biggest problem last season besides Special teams up till week 10? Only one person answers the question and that’s Denzel Perryman! 1996 we missed out on a Cane and the rest is history DP#52 is our ticket to titletown…Lets not get a smokescreen going unless its to throw off other teams.
i dont wanna hear about height, speed blah blah….4.7 is not slow, Was Jon Beason/ Zach Thomas too little? didn’t think so…Perryman 1st or move up to get him 2nd round. No way around it.
Perryman is too slow. He would have to come off the field on 3rd down.
I thought Kendrick’s looked pretty special at the combine and am a little surprised he hasn’t shot up more in mock drafts. He’s a little small but a three down player at number 30 is fine by me. If he’s off the board, I agree with the trade down scenarios.
