Here is your morning cuppa Packers news from greenbaypackernation.com
Packers’ wide receiver Geronimo Allison’s groin injury may require surgery. Coach McCarthy called it a “pretty big injury” and said he would be consulting with a surgeon. The void will likely be filled by Marquez Valdes-Scantling who had 101 yards on just three catches Sunday Night against the Patriots has continued to come on strong and gain the trust of Aaron Rodgers.
Kevin King will likely miss more playing time and not be available for the Dolphins game. King’s hamstring injury will require rest and according to coach McCarthy he will be “challenged to play this week”.
Josh Jones was called up due to the trade of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and other than an inexplicable penalty on a kickoff, he showed up. Jones recorded 6 tackles in the 17-31 loss to the Patriots, four of which were solo.
It is no secret that Davante Adams is a tough cover. While he was held to just 6 catches for 40 yards Sunday night, Adams still had one touchdown and would have likely had another but for an under-thrown ball. Aaron Rodgers wants to find more ways to get Adams involved as he is such a big part of the offense’s success. Look for his catch count to go up on Sunday.
Today the Packers’ general manager Brian Gutekunst once again made moves. In the eleventh hour of the trade deadline, Gutekunst off-loaded former first rounder (2014) Ha Ha Clinton Dix for an undisclosed forth rounder and embattled running back Ty Montgomery for a seventh. The move sets up depth issues at two very important positions moving forward. More
Ty Montgomery talked to the media yesterday in an attempt to explain the inexplicable. In case you haven’t seen it, you can watch his response via nfl.com. While I don’t think Ty is a bad person and I certainly decry any of the threats and accusations that were made against him, when your own team-mate calls you out, and Aaron Rodgers drops the F-bomb on the sidelines…you had better have a good reason for what you did. If you don’t, you had better fess up and accept the consequences. Ty did neither of these things. While it is very hard to determine someone’s motives for doing something and I hate speaking negatively of a Packers player, here are three reasons Ty Montgomery’s excuse for taking the ball out of the endzone with 2:05 left on the clock doesn’t hold water. This will easily be the Packers’ biggest challenge of the season. The Rams are undefeated and virtually unstoppable so far.
The Rams offense is currently best, in the league behind the number one running back in the league right now. That of course, frees them up to also light it up through the air using the play action fake. As soon as teams start crowding the box in an effort to stop the run, the defensive backfield opens up for a potent Rams passing attack that ranks third in the league.
This does not bode well for the Packers who currently rank 22nd in the league against the run. If there is one silver lining, it’s that the Rams don’t attack the edges very well. They like to run off tackle, which means they’ll be running directly at Mike Daniels and Kenny Clark. If these guys can have a good game, it could throw off the Rams timing a bit.
The Rams offense is by far their most potent side of the ball. However, their defense isn’t bad. The Rams rank in the top 10 defensively. Their pass defense is ninth in the league and their run defense is 12th in the league.
So, what do the Packers need to do pull off a win on Sunday?
For starters, despite the fact that the Rams have a fairly good defense, their 12th ranking as a run defense gives the Packers the opportunity to ramp up the run game and chew some clock. If the Packer running backs can get a few more carries this game, they will not only eat the clock but will keep the Rams insanely good offense off the field.
Also, while the Rams defend the pass fairly well, they have struggled covering the third receiver. Look for Geronimo Allison and the rookie receivers to potentially have a good game. If that happens the Packers have a chance to win.
The Rams are averaging over 30 points a game, and they’re going to be around that mark against the Packers. This means that Aaron Rodgers and company will have to be in sync. Even then, this game could come down to the team that has the ball last.
Today on the Quick Slant we take our eyes off the atrocious outing between the Packers and the Lions. Today we discuss the turnovers, Mason Crosby, and both the offensive and defensive production.
In 2017, the Packers drafted 3 running backs in Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams, and Devante Mays. That running back group (now with Mays out of the picture) along with converted wide receiver Ty Montgomery, is off to a good start in 2018. The fantasy league owners and all the national pundits want Aaron Jones to be a featured back but Packers coach Mike McCarthy has more in mind than a fantasy league win…he wants a Super Bowl. The rotation of Jones, Williams, and Monty keeps the group fresher down the line, especially for games in December at Lambeau. This will be a huge advantage for the team toward the end of the season and into the playoffs. But can the team mirror that situation with the three new wide receivers drafted in 2018? More
The Packers’ 2018 roster is set (well…until waiver claims and any final trades get done) and there were some things I loved and some I hated. Here is a “Love it or Leave it” roster cuts edition, I will start with “Leave it”: More
With roster cuts happening even as we speak, I thought I would throw my predictions in the mix. Word that the Bears are acquiring Khalil Mack may be part of the conversation and in particular, incite the Packers to keep more O-linemen and/or blocking TE’s. We will be finding out momentarily as the wait will soon be over and the roster will (for the most part) be decided.
As I write this, news is breaking that the Bears have brokered a deal with the Raiders to acquire Khalil Mack. The home opener just got more interesting as Mack will make an immediate impact once the deal is done. Without question, the Bears got better instantly and their defense was already good and could be considered a playoff contender. Packers fans were hopeful that the Pack might add Mack to the mix but it doesn’t look like that is going to happen. But is there a silver lining to the cloud that is the Packers missing on Mack? Here are three reasons I think the trade may benefit the Pack. Well…at least…here are three reasons I think the Bears may not get over the hump with the addition of Mack. More
