McCarthy Addresses Media About Coaching Changes

mike conferenceMike McCarthy addressed the media today about coaching changes and, most importantly, the relegating of play-calling duties to newly named Associate Head Coach Tom Clements. With Edgar Bennett taking his place as Offensive Coordinator. The change will allow McCarthy to play a more hands-on role in the defense and special teams.

It is important to note that this was a decision made by coach McCarthy and communicated to both Ted Thompson and Mark Murphy and came not because Packers assistants had not gotten attention for head coaching vacancies, but because it was the best thing for the team.

McCarthy has promised that special teams will improve. Also, with his attention to the defense, this is shaping up to be a special year for the Green Bay Packers.

NOTE: Jerry Montgomery has been added as Defensive Front Assistant to work with Dom Capers as20130911-103350.jpg GPN’s own Jeff Hayes discussed yesterday.

Simple answer to your question Brady is only time will tell but something had to be done to try and get over that hump to the big game again…

As I stated in another article:

Whether play calling improves with Clements or not, McCarthy being freed up to coach players and squads to make them aware of situations has to be an improvement. Imagine if he’d told ST that a Hawks FG didn’t matter and to play back and guard against the fake. Imagine if he’d told ST to stick to their assignments before the onside kick. Imagine if he’d been aware that Matthews was not on the field for the last couple series against the Hawks. Imagine if he’d been aware that we had no S help over the top in OT, when only a Hawks TD stopped us from getting the ball back. Every one of these situations could have had a completely different result if McCarthy hadn’t had his nose stuck in his play sheet, planning for the next series.

McCarthy is now freed up to do what a HC should be doing, manage the team as a whole. I expect this change to significantly improve our team as a whole. Go Pack go! :)

I agree David this move could be a good thing but as I said only time will tell..MM is a great play caller he just lacked the killer instinct when he got a lead..Lets hope by him focusing on all aspects of the game now he will find that edge to step on teams when he the down.

I trust Mccarthy as a play caller and right now the play he’s calling is to manage the whole game not focus on a facet. If that’s his call, I get behind it.

I think the biggest problem is we get a lead and we quit playing. We need to keep scoring, step on the throat of the opponent not worrying about running up the score. When you have a stud in your stable let him play!!!!!!
