In 1992, the Falcons traded with the Packers in a deal that brought Brett Favre to Green Bay. It was a decision that would change the face of the organization and bring, not only a franchise QB back to the frozen tundra but would wake a sleeping giant from its slumber.
In 2005, 23 teams made the colossal blunder of passing over Aaron Rodgers in the draft. Each of those teams could have had the QB that will, by the end of his career, hold tons of NFL records.
Each of these decisions favored the Packers in grand style. But, the Packers aren’t immune to making painful mistakes of their own.
Case in point…
Charles Woodson.
In 2013, the Packers made the decision to let Woodson go. It was a heart-rending decision from my perspective. Charles had meant so much to the team and was a huge part of the return to the Super Bowl. Still, I found that I really couldn’t disagree with their decision. All the signs suggested it was time to move on.
Woodson’s age was beginning to be a factor. He was moved from the hard hitting bump and run cornerback position to the safety position. His durability was in question. He had broken his collarbone in the Super Bowl and had nagging injuries thereafter. He was always a fighter but these things affected his play.
Really though, I think it was a simple business decision. The Packers offered Woodson a reduced salary to stay with the team which would have put the team in better financial standing. But, Charles knew he still had it in him to play and still thought he was worth more than the Packers were offering.
And… He was right.
This season Sir Charles hasn’t missed a start and he’s currently tied for #3 in the league in interceptions with five. He’s still tearing the ball out of the opponent’s grip, scooping up the fumbles, and returning the ball back to enemy territory.
*Sigh*
We sure would love to have Woodson still wearing the green and gold. But, sometimes you gamble and lose.
Woodson best CB in the NFL and he is proofing it in Oakland I like Haha as well : we will see next Sunday > GPG
I think Woodson has been a better S than CB, better ball hawk and better use of his tackling skills and run stuffing abilities. Regardless of what happens on Sunday, Charles Woodson is a first ballet HOF inductee.
I’m not convinced that any amount of money could have kept Woodson in GB. Everything I’ve read says he was thinking about retirement soon, and wanted to retire as a Raider.
Thompson hasn’t done better than average with our roster. Rodgers fell into his lap, and he’s struggled to put good defense on the field year after year. He also sticks with players who are proven busts; Marshall Newhouse, Worthy, Brad Jones, etc., etc.. In my opinion, Ted Thompson/Mike McCarthy do not compare favorably in any way to Ron Wolf/Mike Holmgren. 😉
Really, DavidW? You don’t remain a consistently good team like the Packers by drafting bad players year in and year out. Everyone is so quick to point out TT’s misses but few give him credit for his hits. TT traded up to get Clay. TT didn’t have to take Rodgers. We still had Favre and had more pressing needs than QB to use that first round pick on. There have been many solid contributors that were undrafted free agents. I could go on, but I have this feeling you still wouldn’t get it.
