AM Quickslant: 2 Reasons Quarless Might Be Jobless

Andrew Quarless Gun ShootingThe Packers issued a statement  about the Andrew Quarless situation yesterday which really said nothing. Shortly after word came out, we made mention of the fact that the infraction might make it difficult for Quarless to maintain his position on the depth chart. The organization will wait until more information comes out before they make any decisions and that is rational…but here’s reality.

Andrew Quarless was having as good an off-season as anyone on the Packers team, even garnering mention by the venerable Aaron Rodgers. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the incident, Quarless may have in fact put his job in jeopardy.

The Packers are a young team and for the most part, surround core veterans with a lot of young talent. That young talent rarely includes players who have any history of disciplinary issues or trouble. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen from time to time that a player gets into trouble. We all remember the Johnny Jolly story, and many in Packernation were ready to forgive and forget and actually cheered Jolly on upon his return. But Quarless is in a different situation for a couple reasons:

  1. The incident that Andrew Quarless was allegedly involved in involves a gun…and a gun being fired. It will be interesting to see if the Packers treat this incident as different. I think the Packers brass will act seriously and swiftly when the decision comes down. I think Quarless could find himself an example for the youth of the team if it is found that he truly got in a fight and fired a gun.
  2. The Packers believe in Richard Rodgers. Rodgers came on strong at the end of the season and his youth fits in with the cast of this team and with other young players coming to camp willing to do anything to get playing time (and willing to stay out of trouble) Quarless’ time on the team may be short.

Time will tell if Andrew Quarless is able to continue in Green Bay (or elsewhere for that matter) but either way, I trust the Packers brass and expect that they will make the right decision.

Go Pack!

Dump him and move on. Even though it’s tough, you sometimes need to set an example. (or trade him to the Vikings or Raiders). I’d also get rid of Guion.
